Bill left family and the comforts of home to join the US Navy and learn a trade. He heard about Navy SEALs while in basic training, then became one. He made a career of it, retiring as Command Master Chief, SEAL Team EIGHT. In 2006, he went to work for the US Navy again as a civilian, physically and mentally preparing young men and women for Navy Special Operations jobs as a Warrior Challenge Mentor.
In this interview, he talks about the value of challenge and the excitement of learning new skills. He extols the benefits of self-awareness and tolerance for adversity as invaluable skills for full participation in everyday life. There is also discussion about the Code of Conduct of the Armed Forces, the controversy around former SEAL Matt Bissonette’s book ‘No Easy Day,’ and SERE training for civilian and military personnel.
